DSC_7299Laurence Olivier was amongst a number of celebrities who sent  messages of support on the occasion of the opening of Ben Uri’s Dean Street premises in ‘swinging’ Soho. The Society was located on the upper floor of a synagogue building, not an ideal site for an art gallery. This reduced public awareness and led to Ben Uri becoming increasingly inwardly focussed within its own community rather than connecting with the wider London art world.
