The memorial exhibition of Mark Gertler’s work was a great success. The exhibition featured his anti-war masterpiece from 1916, the Merry-Go-Round. After the exhibition closed the Leicester Galleries offered the painting to Ben Uri and it was acquired for the collection. It remained one of Ben Uri’s star works until it was sold for financial reasons to Tate in 1984. It has been a highlight of Ben Uri’s centenary exhibition at Somerset House, as it is almost never loaned due to its fragile condition.
Gertler has been the subject of three further retrospectives at Ben Uri since 1944 and, with 11 works, his art features strongly in the permanent collection.
