Woman with Hat
Else Meidner was a painter, born in Berlin, Germany. She was taught by Ludwig Meidner at the Berlin Academy of Art and they married in 1927. They emigrated to England in 1939 and she worked as a domestic during the war. Afterwards they endured great poverty and grew apart personally and stylistically, although they were jointly exhibited at the Ben Uri in 1949 (where she also exhibited in 1964 and 1972). She remained in London when Ludwig returned to Germany to renewed acclaim, only joining him in 1963 when he became ill. Else returned to London alone, living and painting in increasing isolation and failing health. A joint retrospective was held at the Ben Uri in 2002. Her work is held in London (Tate, Ben Uri).
